Abstract
Recently, there have been some reports on the mummies from the medieval tombs in Korea. Though these mummies were not made from any traditional process for making the mummies. the well-preserved mummies were accidentally found within the medieval tomb of Chosun dynasty. So far mummies and the accompanying remains including the clothes, ancient documents were used as a useful basis for the rebuilding the scene of the medieval Korea society, but nothing has been reported on the histological examination for the mummies until now. Therefore, we first examined to ultra-structure of mummy's hair by using transmission and scanning electron microscope. In general, physical examination with naked eyes that conservation status of mummy's scalp hair was perfectly preserved and the length of the hair was approximately 30§¯. In the light microscopic view of the cross-section of a hair, the hair shape circular in form. In the observation of transmission and scanning electron microscopy, the outer surface of hair was well preserved and covered with many deposits which seemed to inorganic material. The hair was comprised of well organized cuticle and fully developed cortex. The thickness of cuticle was 4§ in diameter and composed of 5 or 6 cuticular cell layers. And the cortex filled with cortical cells and scattered melanin granules.
